Saying thanks
Sunday, October 31, 2010 at 7:08PM Term 4 is around the corner and before we know it, it will be the end of school for another year. As a teacher myself, I make sure that my childrens teachers are thanked for their efforts, something that we all forget to do. This year my 2 boys have 2 teachers each as well as teacher aides. My daughter is in high school, so lots of to thank there!
I thought I would try my hand and doing a simple stitchery design with the iconic apple shape and a simple well known poem to put into a hanging for one of the teachers.

You will need:
Cosmo Cricket Early Bird Fabrics
5039R - Red
5040T - green
5036G - green cherries
5037T - multicolour
3 buttons of various size
DMC thread - black, red and green (codes 347,732,310)
calico or similar suitable for stitchery
bias tape 1 inch wide - I've used red
Finished hanging measures approximately 8.5 x 12 inches. Project uses 1/4 inch seams.
Step one - stitchery
begin by completing your stitchery which you can download by right-clicking on the image and printing out. I've use 2 strands of DMC for the poem in black using a simple backstitch, 3 strands for the apple using a chain stitch, in the red and 3 strands of the green for the leaves, also using a chain stitch. The thank you is also done with the 3 strands of red, in a backstitch. Trim your stitchery to meaure 5.5 inches by 6.5 inches.

step two
Cut your red fabric into 2 inch strips and sew to the sides of your stitchery. Trim back so that the edges are straight and add the tops, making the stitchery surrounded by the red fabric.
step three
Cut green fabric into 1.5 inch strips and add to the top and bottom of your project. Trim so that it sits straight.
Step four
Cut cherry fabric to 1 inch strips and add in the same fashion as step two, to surround the entire project.

Step 5
Cut 7 (plus a few extras) of 2 inch squares from the multicolour fabric. Using these photos as a guide, iron the squares in half and half again to give you points for the bottom of your project. Place along the bottom and pin in place. They should just overlap each other, be sure to slip one inside each other. Baste onto your project so that they stay in place when you add your backing. Cut 3 strips of the bias tape to 3 inches long. Fold in half and pin in place along the top ouf your project to create hanging tabs.

Step 6
Use batting of your choice to add to your project. Cut your backing the same size as your finished front, from the cherries fabric. With right sides together, sew around the outside leaving a small opening to turn out. Trim your corners and turn out. Slip stitch the opening closed and press. Stitch your buttons onto the top right hand side as seen in the finished photos. This adds a small finishing embellishment to your project.

Very thoughtful of you. Children pick up on these things and if
only for a few times a year, they also remember a little bit
about that special teacher.
Thank you for showing the tutorial.
